This fascinating four-part documentary series meets some of Van Dorsten’s children, imprisoned for decades by their father’s beliefs: Israel, who had run away and originally alerted the villagers to their plight, and his older brothers Shin and Edino, and sister Mar Jan. Van Dorsten had set out to establish an ecological utopia, although what he created was less akin to Thomas More’s vision and more like an open-air prison for his family members. Authorities visited a family farm where they found 67-year-old Gerrit-Jan Van Dorsten and his six adult children (he had four more who had left earlier) some of them had never even attended school, and all of them had been secluded and abused by their father, a self-proclaimed prophet. ![]() ![]() In 2019, the Netherlands was shaken by the discovery of an isolated cult in Ruinerwold, a small village around 70 miles from Amsterdam.
